The inaugural production staged in the theater was The Count of Monte Christo, which starred James O’Neill, the father of famed playwright Eugene O’Neil. The building, which was originally built in a Richardsonian Romanesque style, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The three-and-a-half-story detached brick-and-stone edifice was built in 1894. The Smith Opera House, which was previously called the Geneva Theater, is a live performance auditorium in Geneva, N.Y., in the Geneva Commercial Historic District. Since then, around 300 concerts and events a year have been attracting many visitors to its halls. On 28th August 1981, the inauguration of the Old Opera House was celebrated. Thanks to civic protests and generous donations the representative building from the Wilhelminian era, which had been bombed down to its foundation walls, was faithfully rebuilt to the original. But the people of Frankfurt provided an example of civic appreciation and on how to deal with historical heritage.
